CUBS: Parent Helpers - Starting Term 4!

18 Sep 2024 by Lance Clayton

CUB parents,

Thanks for all of your support as Dingo (Adam), Cassowary (Cass), Baloo (Matt) and myself (Gecko/Lance) have charged through 2024 with a fresh new Cub Unit.

It’s been tonnes of fun – so fun that the kids seem to be talking it up and while we started at about 6 or 7, we’re at about 19 CUBs when everyone is there on a Monday!

Thats a lot of Cubs – so – we need a bit of a hand.

We’ve had parents ask and express interest to get involved to this degree – apologies it’s taken a while to get to.

Starting Term 4 (Monday 14th October) we’d love to welcome a parent helper each week to help us run the activities as well as keep a watchful eye over the kids as we try to get activities set up/packed down. We’re definitely finding that 3 regular leaders is not quite enough to be in all places at once.

What we’d love is a roster and every parent helps. If we can count on both parents from each youth jumping on the roster then you’ll help barely once every 6 months – so everyone pitching in is really the fairest and best way to do this.

Some details below.

We thank you in advance for your support in this and we know you’ll have a great time too as you get involved.

1) Apply for a Working With Children Check ASAP (free to do, just select that you’re a volunteer). Please do it this week so that you have it back ASAP!

2) Register on ScoutHub as a ‘New Adult Helper’ (cost $0).

https://1st-dapto.group.scouts….

Select ‘NO’ if you don’t have a police check, and then Scouts will send you an email to get it done – covering the $50 cost to get it yourself. Watch it doesnt go into spam folder.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll get to hang with us and the kiddos as we do increasingly exciting and adventurous activities (eventually all the fun stuff like hiking, canoeing, abseiling, archery etc). You get yourself a cool scout name like Rocket, Hammer, Raptor….whatever works.

You’ll get more insight into what we do, and will be able to support and weigh in more on your child’s Scout journey, seeing them thrive as they seek to grow and overcome challenges and fears. Eventually – you might even want to become a leader via the training and accreditation.

Are there any rules?
There’s no Mum/Dads at Scouts – just leaders. So your child doesn’t call you Mum/Dad, and we refrain from treating our kids any differently to the other scouts (including cuddling while we’re wearing Leader hats). Our kids don’t get preferential treatment, nor is their poor behaviour overlooked. Should something occur to our child at the hands of another child we uphold our role as leaders and don’t make it a personal point to reprimand a child as an upset mum/dad. We definitely discuss the matter at night’s end and then decide on the appropriate action to take.

Do I need to wear/buy a uniform?

No – this is a non-uniformed role. So you’ll wear regular clothes approprite for the night.

Can I need to discuss this more?

Sure! Catch one of us at any upcoming regular or extracurriculur meeting.
